Where to Watch Taipei 101 New Year's Eve Fireworks
Every year on December 31, the countdown ends with a few minutes of fireworks shooting out of Taipei 101, one of the most famous New Year’s Eve shows in Asia. Whatever happened in the past year, just let it go. All you have to do is be well prepared to welcome the new year and see the splendid fireworks on Taipei 101!
Here are some places that are perfect for seeing the whole Taipei 101 fireworks show. I promise you will forget all the annoying things of the past year the moment the fireworks start.
There’re northeast seasonal winds in Taiwan every winter, so if you want a clear view of Taipei 101 fireworks, please choose places in the north instead of the south, or you might only see a smoky view.
Here are some of the best places to watch the Taipei 101 fireworks: Taipei City Hall Plaza (where the big countdown concert is held), Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, Songgao Road, Songzhi Road and Songren Road. For a view from above, many people hike up Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan) next to Xiangshan MRT Station, but the trail gets extremely crowded, so go up in the afternoon and bring a flashlight.
Tips for New Year’s Eve
- Arrive early. The best spots fill up hours before midnight; many people claim their place in the afternoon.
- Take the MRT. Roads around Xinyi District are closed to traffic on the evening of December 31, and the Taipei Metro usually runs all night with extra trains. In recent years it has run non-stop from the morning of December 31 to midnight on January 1, but check Taipei Metro’s announcements for the year you travel.
- Get off one stop early. Taipei City Hall and Taipei 101/World Trade Center stations get so crowded that trains may skip them and some exits close in the evening. Walking from Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, Yongchun or Xinyi Anhe stations is often faster.
- Plan your way home. After the show, avoid the stations right next to Taipei 101 and walk a few blocks to a quieter one.
