Alishan Sea of Clouds: When and Where to See It
Maybe you have seen a sea of people or sea of flowers. But, have you ever seen “sea of clouds”? The sea of clouds on Alishan is one of the mountain’s famous “five wonders”, together with the sunrise, the sunset, the cypress forest and the forest railway.
Because it depends on the weather, the sea of clouds doesn’t appear every day on Alishan. It shows up most often in autumn and early winter, roughly from October to December, on clear days with a big temperature difference between day and night. The best times to see it are early morning and in the evening, before or after the sunset. People who have luckily seen it before said that the sight was so spectacular that they would never forget.
The massive clouds surrounding Alishan will roll up and down just like waves. Lucky enough, you might see the changes in colors on the sea of clouds, from orange or red to blue or purple.
Alishan is definitely stunning and a must-go attraction. If you decide to visit Alishan, please don’t forget to bring enough batteries for your camera. Oh! The most important is to check if the condition of that day is good enough to see the sea of clouds.
Where to see the sea of clouds
Inside the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, the Zhushan Sunrise Observation Deck is the classic spot at dawn, when the sunrise and the sea of clouds often appear together. The Ogasawara Mountain observation deck is another good viewpoint, and on the way up the mountain, the area around Erwanping is known for its cloud views in the afternoon and at sunset. Fog can roll in at any time, so give yourself more than one chance if you can stay overnight.
How to get to Alishan
Since July 2024, the Alishan Forest Railway runs all the way again from Chiayi Station to Alishan Station, for the first time since typhoon damage in 2009. Seats are limited, so book your train tickets in advance. You can also take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus from Chiayi HSR Station or Chiayi train station. Mornings at around 2,200 meters are cold, especially in winter, so bring warm layers for the sunrise.
